Advanced Supplemental Externship

Opportunity

This paid training opportunity is geared towards 4th year doctoral psychology students in possession of a Master’s degree. The position offers supplemental training in individual psychotherapy with adults. Services are delivered exclusively via telehealth to individuals residing in Maryland. Clinical concerns include adjustment, anxiety, depression, interpersonal difficulties, substance use, and trauma. Supervision is provided by Clinton Lewin, PsyD.

Commitment

A minimum of 7 total hours per week are expected, distributed as follows:

  • 5 hours for scheduled individual psychotherapy appointments

  • 1 hour for supervision

  • 1 hour for administration (e.g. record-keeping, supervision preparation)

Scheduled clinical hours are maintained at the extern’s discretion with supervisory feedback/intervention if indicated. Supervision is held for 50 minutes at a consistent day and time, and will be scheduled to minimize conflict with course schedules and primary externship.

Specifically, I would be changing wording from "in-person supervision required" to "supervision will be provided via a combination of in-person and videoconferencing methods, in proportion to academic program expectations and concurrent supervision at other training sites."

Supervision

Externs will receive one hour of individual supervision weekly. As a remote training setting, HIPAA-compliant telehealth, email, and phone are provided. For the purposes of offering Interpersonal Process Recall as a direct supervision method, a HIPAA-compliant screen-recording software is provided for recording selected psychotherapy sessions.

Supervision will be provided via a combination of in-person and videoconferencing methods, in proportion to academic program expectations and concurrent supervision at other training sites. For example, if a primary externship offers supervision via teleconferencing only, in-person supervision will be the primary method of delivery in order to diversify training experience.
